The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho) invites applications for foreign students in Doctoral Course on Environmental Systems Engineering at the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyushu University on the following conditions.

1. Study Areas and Number of Foreign Students for Admission
1.1 Study Areas: Environmental Systems Engineering
Civil and Structural Engineering
Urban Environmental Engineering
Applied Quantum Physics and Nuclear Engineering
Maritime Engineering
  1.2 Status: Successful applicant will be granted a College Student visa
  1.3 Number of students to be accepted: 10

2. Qualification Requirements
2.1 Nationality: Applicants must be citizens of qualified countries under the Japanese Government Scholarship Program and reside outside Japan. Applicant must reside in his or her respective country upon filing of application for Monbusho scholarship grant.
2.2 Age Limit: Less than 35 years old as of April 1, 2008, i.e., those who were born after April 2,1973.
2.3 Academic Background:
2.3.1 Those who hold or are to receive a Master's degree awarded by a postgraduate school outside Japan by September 30, 2008.
2.3.2 Those with qualifications equivalent to a Master's degree accorded by Kyushu University.

Health: Those who are certified as both physically and mentally healthy by a qualified and recognized physician.

Language: Applicants should preferably possess a form of official English qualification such as TOEFL, TOEIC, Cambridge, etc.

Time of Arrival: Successful applicants must arrive in Japan between October 1 and October 7, 2008.

Remarks:
1) Military personnel and civilian employees are not eligible for this course if they remain on active duty.
2) Those who do not arrive within the time limit will be subjected to cancellation of their enrollment.
3) An applicant whose spouse is a Japanese Government Scholarship student will not be selected. Even if husband and wife apply for this scholarship, both of them will not be selected at the same time.
4) Persons already receiving financial support from their government or other organizations are ineligible for this scholarship.
5) Those who fail to receive a Master's degree by September 30, 2008 will be subjected to cancellation of their enrollment.

3. Duration of Scholarship
Three years, from October 2008- to September 2011.
(a year and a half for persons having a doctoral degree, from October 2008 to March 2010)

4. Scholarship and Benefits
4.1 A monthly stipend amounting to 170,000 yen (as of April 2008) will be awarded to successful applicant. In case of a leave of absence or a long absence, the stipend will be suspended during that period.
4.2 Travel Expenses
4.2.1 Onward travel: An economy class air ticket from the nearest international airport to the student's home to Fukuoka International Airport will be provided.
4.2.2 Return travel: An economy class air ticket from Fukuoka International Airport to the nearest international airport to the departing student's home will be provided to those leaving within the fixed time limit after the scholarship period.
*Fees of travel insurance for both onward and return trips are to be paid by the student.
  4.3 Fees for entrance examination, admission, and tuition will be exempted.
  *In addition to these, a sum of 25,000 yen for initial relocation expenses and reimbursement of a part of medical costs will be available from the Association of International Education, Japan.

5. Evaluation of Applicants
5.1 Kyushu University will select candidates for recommendation to Monbukagakusho by examining their applications and qualifications.
5.2 Based on the recommendation of Kyushu University, Monbukagakusho will screen and authorize admission of candidates as foreign students to be supported by the scholarship.
5.3 Applicants will be notified of the results of their application in the middle of July 2008. Successful applicants will be enrolled at Kyushu University as full-time graduate students.

6. Description of the Special Course
6.1 Thesis work will be carried out in English. Students will be expected to learn the Japanese language gradually during their stay.
6.2 Students will be expected to write a thesis based on research carried out during the course and submit it to examiners in the Graduate School of Engineering, Kyushu University for evaluation. The degree of Doctor of Engineering will be awarded to those who have passed the examination of thesis.
